Hydraulic presses and press brakes are used on a daily basis to manufacture everything from jewellery to automobiles. Depending on the material that is used, and this matter’s tensile strength, amongst other factors, the hydraulic machine will be used to press, bend and form the pieces.
Ultimate tensile strength
The ultimate tensile strength (UTS), also known as tensile strength (TS), is the maximum amount of tensile (stretching) stress that a material can resist prior to the material breaking or failing. The opposite of tensile strength is compressive strength.
Force per unit area
Tensile strength is essentially calculated by dividing the area of the material tested (the cross section) by the stress placed on the material; this is measured as the force per unit area. The unit that is used is pounds of force per square inch (lbf/in2 or psi) or kilo-pounds per square inch (ksi) that are the equivalent of 1000 psi. For simplicity, the most commonly used measure of tensile strength is “ksi”.
Tensile strength is an important gage of a material's ability to perform in a specific application
Compressive and Tensile Strength
In comparison to many other materials, steel has an important tensile strength. Steel also has the characteristic of having a tensile strength that is nearly equal to its compressive strength. In other words, steel is able to withstand a crushing force as much as a stretching force; concrete, on the other hand, has a very good compressive strength, yet a very minimal tensile strength.
Various Materials
When selecting the best material for an application, tensile strength is one, amongst many metal properties that are examined. Heat tolerance, hardness, corrosion resistance, ability to weld and other factors must be taken into account.
Bending Materials
The process of bending, which involves a hydraulic press machine, curves the sheet metal by using the material’s flexibility to modify its shape. The metal or steel is stressed past its yield strength but below its crucial tensile strength, otherwise, it would break. When a material is bent using a hydraulic press, the bending produces very minimal, or no, variation in the thickness of the sheet metal.
