A U.S. company has just been fined almost $100,000 following a January workplace incident in which an employee lost three fingers while operating a hydraulic brake press. The company was found liable for a number of safety violations, including exposure to unguarded machinery and the absence of adequate guarding. According to Allianz, a U.K. company that deals in engineering insurance, brake presses can be one of the most dangerous pieces of machinery on a workshop floor if safety procedures aren’t respected. When accidents occur, they are often serious and involve the loss of fingers or even a complete hand.
Employers and employees must be sure to adhere to these safety measures from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety wherever industrial machinery is used:
• Check and adjust all safety devices before each job.
• Ensure that guards are in position and in good working condition before operating.
• Ensure all machines have a start/stop button within easy reach of the operator.
• Each machine should have only one operator at one time. However, everyone should know how to stop the machine in an emergency.
• Keep work area clean, well swept, and well lit. Floors should be level and have a non-slip surface.
• Ensure there is enough room around the machine to do the job safely.
• Obtain first aid immediately for all injuries.
• Use the appropriate safety equipment for the job. Wear CSA-certified safety glasses with side shields or goggles. Prescription eye glasses are not substitutes for safety glasses.
• Wear appropriate safety footwear.
• Wear respiratory protection where required.
